Prevention Breakout
Group Report (continued...)
From this brainstorming activity the Prevention Breakout
Group identified the following Action Priorities.
School-based Diabetes Education
- This intervention was seen as a focus of community
education.
- Increase education about seriousness/consequences
of diabetes
- Screen for diabetes at the school site
- Teach Fast Food Nation in classes as part of a program
that brings ethnic physicians into schools to work as
partners and mentors with Middle School and High School
Students
- Key Partners - schoolteachers/school nurses.
- Need to find school site champions.
- Need to identify ethnic physicians to get involved
with schools.
Research into Prevention Strategies
- Importance of participative culturally competent
research involving communities of color.
- Provide tools and designs for research.
- Collaborate with university researchers on design
and funding.
- Collaborate with Community-based organizations in
the design and funding of the research.
- Work with practicing physicians to get "real
world" data. Students can collect data.
- Overcome literacy barriers.
Clearinghouse
- Culturally competent health education resources
- Information on community resources
- Clearinghouse of what everyone is doing with regard
to diabetes prevention programs and resources.
Other Priorities For Action
- Diabetes screening & education in schools/clinics/worksites.
- Establish an "Investment Fund" for prevention.
Key partners needed to initiate and sustain these efforts
will include:
- Schools
- School Nurses & Teachers
- Health Departments
- Community-based Organizations
- Business Community
- Health Plans
- Academic Centers
The Prevention Breakout Group identified some key roles
for ethnic physician organizations in addressing these prevention
strategies
- Ethnic physician organizations can take the lead in
addressing cultural competency, both in terms of workforce
issues and health information resources.
- Ethnic physicians can speak with a collective voice
to those in power and authority about the health disparities
associated with diabetes and approaches to address these.
- To maximize success in these prevention efforts, we
need to expand vision the vision of ethnic physicians
to include both focus on environmental factors that
result in health disparities and the importance working
with community members to address these disparities.
NEPO can be the vehicle to achieve this expanded vision.
