D. Presentations and Updates

4. Art Fleming, MD, President, Golden State Medical Association, Charles R. Drew Medical Society
- Update on L.A. County Health Care Fiscal Crisis

Dr. Fleming updated the participants on the L.A. County health care fiscal crisis and the impact on the Martin Luther King, Jr. / Drew Medical School and Hospital. In his presentation, he focused on the series of events leading to Drew's loss of accreditation for its surgical residency program. As a result, the future of Drew as a medical training institution and the ability of the hospital to function as a trauma facility are in jeopardy. Dr. Fleming did not request the Network to take action to reverse the decision. Rather, he used his presentation to present a lesson on the fragility of minority lead institutions dedicated to service to communities of color.
